perchance to dream
22 August 2007It’s odd, when the bee fields pattern came out, I was entranced. I haven’t yet ever knit a shawl, and yet. And then when the kit was announced in the buckwheat honey colorway, I was horribly horribly tempted.
I wanted it so badly that I kept thinking about it day and night. You know how that goes.
I very nearly went and bought the kit even though really, no, I shouldn’t. There were things like “a budget, have you heard of that?” to consider. And then the “you have yarn for Icarus and have you knit that yet? No, you haven’t!” thing to concede. And so I didn’t. I didn’t buy the kit. Even though, oddly for me, I badly wanted a shawl that was to be knit in yellow.
I hate yellow.
I hate yellow only slightly less than orange.
Which is not saying much, perhaps, because ordinarily? I rilly rilly hate orange.
But….. this… this one I loved. It was a honey gold kind of yellow, something that I associate with fall. The kind of color that looks good with corduroy and denim. The sort of shade that just bespeaks the coming of one of the best times of the year.
Crunching leaves and clogs and handknit socks and…. this. This shawl draped over my shoulders, atop a corduroy jacket worn with jeans. I could just see it in my mind’s eye, this sublime bit of perfection. Of rightness.
Me. Someone who doesn’t ordinarily think about shawls that way. The only other shawl I ever loved before this bit of knitseizing was Icarus, and even then… I didn’t rush to knit it, did I? (Granted, I was sick forfreakingever, but still.)
The theme of the shawl didn’t grab me at all, I don’t think about bees one way or another. What I loved was the undulating edge on the outside, the swirling vertical lines of the lower pattern, and how the shawl was divided into sections. I liked how it all meshed together. I just did. Not so simple as Icarus, which I love for its simplicity, but definitely…. cohesive.
It just works.
And I wanted it.
Thus, the day I won Cara’s contest was…. a very very very very very very very happy day. To put it mildly.
Because my dream was being realized.
I just received the yarn and the pattern, and I must tell you: my love remains true.
In a world where knitters must by necessity be fickle and ever distracted by new patterns, I think it’s a true gift, this singular fascination with this shawl.
And so I must and shall cast on for the bee fields shawl now. I have no intention of it being my exclusive project, and as such, I will finish it when I do, and that’s okay. I plan to love knitting this project (if that makes sense) and that means knitting it when I feel my best, and putting it down when I need to.
Because before the wearing comes the process, and I don’t think this one should be hurried. I’ve spent six weeks (an eternity for a knitter, don’t you think?) loving it in my mind’s eye, and I look forward to loving it on my needles.

Oooh, that yarn is gorgeous! Can’t wait to see your shawl!
Oh, it’s going to be gorgeous. I feel the same way as you about yellow and orange, but this just seems … right. (although I like orange and blue together, I still haven’t found something that “goes” with yellow.) Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching your progress on this. Enjoy!
I had a tough time deciding on the colorway for mine - and went with the green for all the reasons you gave for avoiding your purchase of the “yellow.” I went back and forth tho’ - and now I can’t wait to see yours (your photos are scrumptious)…congrats on your win!
(((hugs)))
It’s a very very good thing that you won!
I saw the bee fields shawl mentioned on your sidebar and wondered. Now I know. Although I don’t share your feelings about yellow and orange, I’m pleased that it seem the perfect honey yellow has come your way.
Enjoy the process on this challenging pattern! Perhaps we should have a bee support group as I begin the honeybee stole.
I completely understand your love of THAT yellow/gold…it’s truly lovely. Knitting is a process and if that process takes days, months or years…it’s still enjoyable. Knit on!
That shawl will be *gorgeous*! And I love your cat.
I felt the EXACT same way about this pattern! I hate bees - I’m allergic to them. I’m not a big fan of yellow, I’m not sure that I’m a shawl-type person and I don’t really know much about knitting delicate lace. But, something about this pattern pulled me in - I had to have it. I ordered it in the “Tupelo Gold” colorway and am quite disappointed. The color is lovely. But it’s green. Green, green, green. NOT “gold”. And I LOVE the color you ordered. I might have to get some Buckwheat Honey now!
Knitters don’t have to use reason when falling in love with the idea of a project. I’m not a shawl-type person but I sure to love making them. It’s magical how you take a blob of knitting, block it, and come out with a perfect shawl.
congrats on getting everything together for this project - it’s important to love the process as much as loving the finished product - your insight reminds me to love the journey
Congratulations! What a lovely prize
It’s lovely. I can’t wait to see it done. I feel the same as you about yellow (and orange). You are right. That one is different.
You hate yellow & orange? Those are almost my favorite colors. Well, orange.
Congratulations! And it is a gorgeous, gorgeous shawl.
Here’s to a happy and satisfying project! Both the pattern and the yarn are gorgeous.
Wow, you lucky lucky thing! I’ve been yearning for that kit too!
*sigh* Pining for the kit…
Stop making me jealous you cruel you. *snif*
Enjoy!
I found that knitting my first shawl was a complete joy, and I abandoned all other projects to work on it, and only it, until it was done. Getting the hang of the lace can be odd, even frustrating. Handling the fine wool on needles that feel far too large for it (after sock-knitting!) can be weird. But Oh! How addictive it becomes!
I dind’t know about that pattern - now I want it too!
Congratulations on your winning!
I just ordered the Bee Fields stole and I chose the Buckwheat Honey colorway, I’m glad I did after seeing the pictures you posted.
Enjoy!
I love that shawl, too. As soon as I can justify the purchase, I will be ordering it for myself. (But I’ve also just finished my Icarus, so I feel great shawl-wise.)
