buried in yarn

21 December 2007

DSCN8400

This is what I’ll be doing for the next week that I’m mostly “off” from the temp jobs, plural.

I love them. They’re different. Up there is little house on the prairie, the coffee house, and the color purple, half strength.

uses for stash

20 December 2007

DSCN8377

I’m pretty sure the boys have already named and loved on this blanket - it’s insanely warm and insanely huge, and it’s only half done! It’s made of Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky Hand Dyes. ELEVEN BALLS. I was a very new knitter. WTF was I thinking?

I have no idea.

But I love this blanket. I love how it’s using up this crazy stash. Omg. 45 yards of super-warm yarn to a ball. It’ll be perfect in February. You know it. I know it.

The boys know it.

Only question: how the heck do I block this? Never mind wash it… Lalalalalalala at least I’m using up stash. I just thought, you know, if I blocked it, it’d stretch (always a good thing, bigger blanky!). It’s knitted on size 17s. MMmmMMMMMmmmmMMMM.

o hai blog

19 December 2007

DSCN8411

Cripes, this long without blogging? DO NOT WANT!

What have I been doing? Let’s see. There was the first temp job. And then I added a second temp job. Equivalent of full time temping. And then there’s the yarn thing. Dyeing *mumble mumble mumble* skeins of yarn, for The Loopy Ewe. And then there’s knitting. And sometimes I sleep.

Love you, blog! Promise to blog more often… especially since I uploaded pictures! Slightly helpful….

perseverance

yarn-anonymous-7-days.gif

It’s not a well known fact, but the ancient Greeks and Romans were quite well aware of the addictive properties of yarn. They formed many such societies like the current day Yarn Anonymous(tm), each with varying levels of severity. Some made you burn all your yarn. Other, less scrupulous, organizations merely made you donate all your supplies to them (and then turned around and resold them to other knitters and crocheters).

In honor of these, our line of Yarn Anonymous achievement badges are fashioned after the Greek coins used to recognize the recipient’s hard work and dedication in avoiding purchases of new yarn.

Because. Dude.

I made it this far! And I thought about yarn a few times. And backed away. Successfully.

One day at a time….

uptown scarf

6 December 2007

DSCN8326

Apologies for the non-modeled shot, but what can you do? It’s dark when I leave the apartment, it’s dark when I come home, it’s grey outside, and the scarf is grey!

But boy howdy do I LOVE this scarf. It’s the uptown scarf from Weekend Knitting. And really, yes, very easy to execute. Find two balls of Blue Sky Alpacas’s bulky wool and alpaca yarn, cast on, knit on 35s, and try not to lose the needles. Sadly, I -did- lose a needle knitting this. 35! I lost it! I will never live this one down.

I lost it in Chicago. On the bus.

Yeah, I’m not over it yet.

But you know? I love this thing! Even though, folded in half, it’s as tall as I am… yes. That big. And I have to wrap it around my neck three times.

Knit one. You won’t regret it.

Just don’t lose a needle, mmkay.

almost garter

5 December 2007

But pure pleasure.

DSCN8300

OMG, this stuff is incredible. The pattern is simplicity itself: Norah Gaughan’s almost garter scarf. I combined two skeins of Jade Sapphire cashmere worsted weight… they were almost the same color, but definitely very different side by side in yarn cupcake form. But in this scarf? Perfect.

I LOVE IT. I am so glad that this yarn finally found a use, it was one of the first purchases I made as a clueless new knitter in my very first LYS visit. (Yeah. Other new knitters go for the Red Heart Supersaver. I…. went for this.)

I need 82 more of these. Please.

Secret post

1 December 2007

As of today, 1 December 2007, I do solemnly pledge I shall purchase no yarn whatsoever for personal use in any circumstance. No exceptions.

yarn

That I’ll purchase yarn for bellamoden is a given, of course, because that is stuff I then dye, reskein, pack, and sell all over the world.

pattern

Patterns, as inspirations, are not things I normally run out and purchase willynilly, so I will take that on a case by case basis.

needles

Needles will only be purchased if, for some strange reason, I lack the appropriate ones to complete a project.

This pledge will be binding for the next thirteen months, as I build my business and become the change I want to see. My stash and dyepots are incredibly inspiring, and I look forward to my focused creativity.

I realize that this is a challenge, which is why I am stating so publicly. I would appreciate support from each and every one of you. Thank you!
