27 August 2008More than a year ago, I knit from my first purchased skeins of Koigu. The first sock was completed in five days, and was blogged here. That was July of LAST YEAR.
And no forward motion from there.
Finally, I realized two things. One, I never ever wanted to knit the second of the pair. And two, I didn’t want to frog the first sock. I didn’t want to reknit an whole entire perfectly fine well fitting sock just because I didn’t want the second sock’s process.
STANDSTILL.
What to do?
The solution was a bit unorthodox, I admit, but it worked, I think.
On the left is a cable rib sock. On the right is a river valley sock.
The only things the two socks have in common, other than that, of course, they fit, is that they have picot hems, are worked on 66 stitches, and have the same toe. Everything else is different.
And together you have a pair that fits, and a pair that shows the beauty of Koigu in two different interpretations. And maybe, in the end, more importantly: a pair that shows a year of growth.
And at the end, it turned out, that was what I wanted.

They are lovely!
What an interesting way to deal with second sock syndrome!
I love that idea!
Hey, why not? Who says they have to match? The yarn’s the same. They’re like fraternal twins rather than identical twins. And they are both beautiful.
Great idea! They’re both beautiful.
Oooh, how daring! They look terrific. : )
[...] this is what I wanted to do; (and after seeing Bellamoden’s post today about her beautiful mistmatched Koigu socks I don’t feel so bad) I would like to knit the [...]
They both look beautiful. I’ve been wanting to do the same with a pair of socks of mine. I just can’t bear knitting the second one just like the first!
That is an inspired idea. They both look so gorgeous and they’re clearly a pair.
I LOVE your awesome footwear! Don’t be surprised if you see your terrific solution for second sock boredom begin to bubble up across knittingdom.
brilliant! no one ever said socks need to be identical twins…fraternal is fantastic. i love this idea, b/c i’m usually bored with the process after knitting just one as well. it’s kind of like solving a crossword–why do the whole thing again? *grin*
you may just have given me the courage to try a new sock strategy…
