DYEING METHODS
PAINTED
Painted skeins are similar to traditional multicolored yarns, but with longer color runs. Your choice of stitch and gauge create unique patterns: striped, variegated, the sky’s the limit. I don’t know what will happen and neither do you. Pure magic.
COMPLEX PAINTED
What happens when colors layer in different ways in a skein? That’s what you and I will find out in this hybrid method, which combines the best of painted and batik dyeing.
BATIK
Batik dyed skeins have regular short repeats of color, though the arrangement of color lengths may be random. Striping is unlikely, and you should expect a fun variegated yarn that will stand up to as little or as much patterning as you like.
TINCTURE
Tincture dyed skeins don’t have regular repeats. You’re guaranteed the tone-on-tone variegation of closely related shades, wonderful for detailed sock patterns.
SEDIMENTARY
Sedimentary dyed skeins are double or triple processed in order to produce a yarn with rich character and an almost tweedy flavor. The seductively elusive color depends on how the light hits it. Not a traditional variegated yarn, yet more complex than solids, this yarn works well with patterning.
GRAFFITI
Graffiti dyed skeins, like their street smart namesake, have irregular color concentrations and varying repeat lengths. Don’t expect a yarn that’s the same from start to finish. This yarn changes its character as you knit along, keeping you on your toes. Take care to begin knitting at the same color depth, if you want matching socks.
GRADUATED
Graduated dyed skeins are single-color skeins which begin at the lightest hue and shift gradually, gracefully, to darker and darker shades.They’re highly directional, so take care to begin knitting at the same color depth, if you want matching socks. Due to the unique character of the dye process, this yarn has a marvelously wavy texture, a character and charm like no other.
KETTLE DYED
Kettle dyed yarns are traditional mostly-solid yarns, with less variegation than tincture dyed yarns. Lovely for heavily patterned designs.
